It's that time of year again when I question my life choices: My Octoblur Horror Movie Marathon is imminent. As I prepare to watch God-only-knows-how-many horror movies during the month of October, I am filled with something not dissimilar to dread. Am I really going to do this again? The answer is "Yes," and, this year, it's going to rock!
It's ROCKTOBLUR!
My theme this year is "Rock & Roll Horror," which, to be honest, is increasing my dread. There are a lot of horror movies with rock-adjacent characters, or a rock-centric plot, or a rock-fueled soundtrack, or just some kind of unmistakably rocktastic spirit, but — here's the catch — I've seen most of the well-known ones, leaving me with a motley crew of very dubious, highly disreputable, and downright shitty-looking fringe movies to watch during this year's marathon. I will definitely have to throw in some rewatches of old favorites to mitigate what looks like an onslaught of horror horribles.
My Favorite Rock & Roll Horror Movies
I might dip into this lot for a few rewatches. It's been quite a while for some of them. However, the object of my horror marathon is discovering things I haven't seen, so I will try to use this collection sparingly. I think Suicide Club, The Lure, TerrorVision, and Green Room are most likely to feature this Octoblur.
Not favorites, but may be worthy of revisiting
I'm less fond of these, but some will require a second look this month. Certainly, I will rewatch The Lost Boys, The Crow, and Jennifer's Body with my teenage daughter this year. I think both We Summon the Darkness and Demons also need another look.
Must-watches from my unseen shortlist
My shortlist for Octoblur 2024 has nearly 180 movies on it. I will be lucky to get to a third of those! Here are the most likely to make it to this year's horror movie marathon:
Of course, I don't stick to my Octoblur themes with religious faithfulness. I will cheat on this theme with who knows which new, classic, foreign, obscure, and sleazy extracurriculars. You can follow me here or on the Medialifecrisis website to find out all the dirty details…
